MDC offers leveled courses, cohorts, and teaching certifications in:
Infant-Toddler (0-3 years)
Early Childhood (2.5-6 years)
Elementary I (6-9 years)
Elementary I-II (6-12 years)
At MDC, we believe that any course designed to educate Montessori Teachers must have as its
guiding values the fundamental principles upon which Maria Montessori based her philosophy. The
same principles that pertain to children's education need to be applied whenever possible to adults.
MDC believes that if this same philosophy is adhered to, adult students taking our courses will develop a
love of Montessori Education that will continue long past the completion of their certification.
The MDC philosophy, therefore, includes the following principles:
• In following Montessori's concern for freedom of choice of the student, MDC is guided by a deep
respect for each student's individual process of development. Open-ended discussion questions
in the Independent Study and individually selected research projects are examples of methods
used to implement the student's freedom of choice.
• Maria Montessori emphasized the active participation of the learner; consequently, this course
focuses on the activity of the student. Numerous written assignments, illustrated lesson albums,
and a practical final evaluation are methods by which MDC provides opportunities for active
participation.
• Dr. Montessori felt that the process of development was much more important than the end
product. Therefore, MDC attempts to provide an atmosphere of positive cooperation among all
individuals involved in the program. Many supportive peer relationships with mentoring are
sustained long after the completion of the program. Methods used to implement this belief
include closely supervised self-evaluation, constructive criticism, and emphasis on objective
evaluation.
